Getting started

Pilates Equipment for Home: What You Actually Need.

Starting Pilates at home is simpler than it sounds. Here’s what you need, what each prop is for and how to build from there.

Pilates 101 Ivory home Pilates kit with all seven pieces

What equipment do I need for Pilates at home?

You can start with just your body and a comfortable spot with room to lie down. Small props, often called Pilates accessories, are optional, and they add variety and resistance as you go.

Many Pilates movements need nothing more than a bit of floor space. Props give you something to press into, hold or glide on, which can make familiar movements feel new.

All seven pieces below come together in the Pilates 101 kit.

What does each piece do?

Each piece adds something different: resistance, support, extra load or a smooth glide. Here’s how the seven pieces in the Pilates 101 kit work.

  • Pilates ring

A 13.5 in ring with intentionally firm resistance. Press into it or hold it during familiar movements.

  • Mini stability ball

A 10 in (25 cm) anti-burst PVC mini ball. Squeeze it, lean into it or use it for support.

  • Fabric resistance band

A light-resistance band, a gentle place to start with band work.

  • Silicone resistance band

A heavy-resistance band for when you want more challenge.

  • 2 lb hand weights

A pair of hand weights that add load to arm movements.

  • Adjustable ankle/wrist weights

Weights you can wear on your ankles or wrists to add load to leg and arm movements.

  • Gliding sliders

Dual-sided sliders. Use the smooth plastic side on carpet and the foam side on hard floors, then glide through lunges, planks and more.

Do I need all of them to start?

No. Start with one or two pieces and add more as you go.

Pick whatever feels most approachable and get comfortable with it first. There’s no rush to use every piece in every session.
