The Pilates Resistance Bands Guide: Fabric vs Silicone.

Two bands, two levels of resistance. Here’s how to tell them apart and choose the right one for each movement.

Pilates 101 ivory fabric and silicone resistance bands

What’s the difference between fabric and silicone bands?

The main difference is resistance. Every Pilates 101 kit includes one fabric band with light resistance and one silicone band with heavy resistance.

Having both means you can choose lighter or heavier resistance depending on the movement and how you feel that day.

The fabric and silicone bands are two of 7 pieces in the Pilates 101 kit.

Which one should I start with?

If you are new, start with the fabric band. Its light resistance is an easy way to learn each movement.

Move to the silicone band’s heavy resistance when a movement feels comfortable with the fabric band and you would like more challenge. There is no rush.

What are five beginner exercises with resistance bands?

Place the band just above your knees or around your thighs and move slowly. These five options are an easy place to begin.

  1. 01

    Glute bridge

Lie on your back with knees bent and the band just above your knees. Press your knees gently outward as you lift and lower your hips.

  2. 02

    Clamshell

Lie on your side with knees bent and the band above your knees. Keep your feet together and lift your top knee, then lower with control.

  3. 03

    Seated knee opening

Sit tall with the band above your knees. Press your knees gently apart, then bring them back together slowly.

  4. 04

    Side step

Stand with the band above your knees and a slight bend in your legs. Take a small step to the side, follow with the other foot, then repeat back.

  5. 05

    Standing kickback

Stand tall holding a chair or wall for balance, with the band above your knees. Extend one leg back a small distance, then return. Switch sides.

How do I care for my resistance bands?

Keep both bands clean, check them before use and store them flat or loosely rolled.

  • Wipe the silicone band after use and let it dry before storing.
  • Spot clean the fabric band with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
  • Check both bands for wear before each use.
  • Keep them away from sharp edges and rough surfaces.
  • Store them flat or loosely rolled rather than stretched.
