The Pilates Ring Guide: How to Use Your Magic Circle.
The ring gives you something steady to press into and hold onto. Here’s how to get comfortable with yours and start using it.

What is a Pilates ring (also called a magic circle)?
A Pilates ring, often called a magic circle, is a circular prop you press into or hold during movement. The Pilates 101 ring measures 13.5 in.
It can be held between your hands, placed between your legs or used as a simple point of contact during familiar movements.
The Pilates ring is one of 7 pieces in the Pilates 101 kit.
Why does it feel firm?
The Pilates 101 ring has intentionally firm resistance. It is designed to give you something solid to press against.
You do not need to squeeze it as hard as you can. A gentle, steady press is enough to begin, and you can build from there at your own pace.
How do I use a Pilates ring?
Place the ring where you can press into it comfortably, then press and release slowly with control.
- Choose your position: seated, lying down or standing.
- Place the ring between your hands, thighs or ankles, resting on the pads.
- Press gently into the ring.
- Release slowly rather than letting the ring spring back.
- Keep your breath steady and move at a pace that feels manageable.
What are five beginner exercises with the Pilates ring?
Start with small, controlled presses and let the ring guide your focus. These five options are an easy place to begin.
- 01
Seated chest press
Sit tall and hold the ring in front of your chest with a pad in each palm. Press your hands toward each other, then release slowly.
- 02
Seated inner-thigh press
Sit tall with feet on the floor and the ring between your thighs. Press gently inward, then release with control.
- 03
Bridge with ring press
Lie on your back with knees bent and the ring between your thighs. Press gently into the ring as you lift and lower your hips.
- 04
Overhead press
Stand or sit tall holding the ring overhead with a pad in each palm. Press your hands toward each other, then release slowly.
- 05
Side-lying ankle press
Lie on your side with the ring between your ankles. Press down gently into the ring, then release with control.
How do I care for my Pilates ring?
Keep the ring clean, check it before use and store it where it can keep its shape.
- Wipe the ring after use and let it dry before storing.
- Store it flat or hanging, without heavy items pressing on it.
- Check the ring and its pads before each use.
- Keep it away from sharp edges and rough surfaces.
